What the PPI number means

Pixels per inch = √(horizontal pixels² + vertical pixels²) ÷ diagonal inches. Pixel pitch in millimetres = 25.4 ÷ PPI. A 27-inch 2560 × 1440 screen has about 109 PPI; a 32-inch 3840 × 2160 screen has about 138 PPI. These calculations describe the panel, not colour accuracy, motion clarity or subpixel layout.

Text, coding and office work

At a typical desktop distance, higher density can make character edges smoother. Increasing resolution without increasing text scaling also makes interface elements smaller. For code and spreadsheets, compare readable line and column counts after scaling, not the raw pixel count. Move a large display back if you repeatedly turn your head.

Gaming and creative work

Rendering 4K requires 2.25 times as many pixels per frame as 1440p. That is not a direct prediction of frame rate, but it explains the extra graphics workload. For photo and video work, check colour gamut, calibration, brightness and connection bandwidth as well as PPI. The density labels here are broad editorial bands, not quality awards.

Windows and macOS scaling

Windows offers percentage scaling so a sharper panel can retain readable text. macOS offers scaled display modes; compare the effective workspace and text appearance in your applications. Very high PPI is often useful with scaling. Keep similar effective text sizes when moving windows between two different screens.

Is 27-inch 1080p sharp enough?

It is about 82 PPI. Large text and games can be comfortable, but fine desktop text looks coarser than on a 27-inch 1440p screen at about 109 PPI. Viewing distance and eyesight affect the difference.

Is 32-inch 4K sharper than 27-inch 1440p?

Yes: about 138 versus 109 PPI, roughly 27% higher density. You may want scaling on the 4K display, so do not assume every extra pixel becomes extra usable workspace.
