Pixels per inch = √(horizontal pixels² + vertical pixels²) ÷ diagonal inches. Pixel pitch in millimetres = 25.4 ÷ PPI. A 27-inch 2560 × 1440 screen has about 109 PPI; a 32-inch 3840 × 2160 screen has about 138 PPI. These calculations describe the panel, not colour accuracy, motion clarity or subpixel layout.
At a typical desktop distance, higher density can make character edges smoother. Increasing resolution without increasing text scaling also makes interface elements smaller. For code and spreadsheets, compare readable line and column counts after scaling, not the raw pixel count. Move a large display back if you repeatedly turn your head.
Rendering 4K requires 2.25 times as many pixels per frame as 1440p. That is not a direct prediction of frame rate, but it explains the extra graphics workload. For photo and video work, check colour gamut, calibration, brightness and connection bandwidth as well as PPI. The density labels here are broad editorial bands, not quality awards.
