Lawn Mower Cutting Width Explained

Cutting width is the width of grass the mower cuts in one pass. Wider decks reduce the number of passes on open ground; narrower decks fit tighter routes and turn more easily around beds and trees.

Useful starting ranges

A 32–34cm deck commonly suits small domestic lawns. Medium lawns often work well around 34–40cm. Areas above roughly 300m² can benefit from 38–43cm or wider if the layout is open. These are starting ranges, not guarantees.

Measure the narrow points

Record gate width, passages, the space between beds and the stored footprint. Leave handling clearance rather than choosing a deck that only just fits. A wide mower can save straight-line passes and then lose time at every obstacle.

Width is not coverage

A wide deck does not prove that a battery or motor is intended for the entire lawn. Compare the maker’s stated maximum area separately. Grass condition, slopes, collection and manoeuvring affect the job.
