What Size Lawn Mower Do I Need?

For lawns up to about 150m², start around a 32cm cutting width. For 150–300m², compare roughly 34–38cm. Areas around 300–500m² often suit 38–43cm, while larger open lawns can justify 43cm or more. Layout can move the answer down a size.

Calculate usable lawn area

Measure each rectangular section in metres and multiply length by width. Treat triangles as half a rectangle and add the sections. Do not include beds, patios or sheds.

If the result sits near a mower’s stated maximum, choose headroom rather than assuming ideal conditions.

Why wider is not always better

Cutting width determines the strip removed in one pass. A wide deck shortens an open route, but it needs room to turn and must fit gates, passages and storage. Obstacles can make a slightly narrower mower faster overall.

Check more than deck width

Manufacturer-stated maximum lawn area, grass-box volume, mower weight, storage position and power type all affect the real job. Battery capacity alone does not provide a reliable universal runtime because grass and mowing conditions alter load.
