How viewing distance changes TV size
The calculator uses the horizontal angle occupied by a 16:9 screen. General viewing uses 26–36°, with 30° as a starting target. Films use 30–40° for greater immersion. These are SetupSelect planning choices, not exact limits on comfort. Screen width = 2 × distance × tan(angle ÷ 2); the diagonal follows from the 16:9 triangle. Results are rounded to common shop sizes.
4K, 1080p and 8K at sofa distance
Higher resolution can make individual pixels less noticeable close up, but it does not change how far your eyes must scan. The 1080p calculation caps the target using three screen heights of distance before rounding. 4K and 8K share the same angle-based comfort range: an 8K badge alone is not a reason to buy a larger screen. Broadcast quality and upscaling still matter.
55 vs 65 inches, and 65 vs 75 inches
A 16:9 55-inch panel is about 122 cm wide; 65 inches is about 144 cm; 75 inches is about 166 cm. Moving from 55 to 65 inches adds roughly 40% image area. Moving from 65 to 75 adds about 33%. Tape the full casing dimensions onto the wall before ordering, and check cabinet width against the feet, not just the panel.
Room size, gaming and wall mounting
An open-plan room can still have a short sofa-to-screen distance. Measure the actual seating position. For gaming, check supported resolution and refresh rate on the specific input, variable refresh rate and input lag. Leave room for cable bends and ventilation when mounting; verify wall construction, bracket load and VESA pattern. A high fireplace mount can make an otherwise suitable screen uncomfortable.

How far should I sit from a 65-inch television?
A 65-inch 16:9 screen occupies about 30° at 2.69 m and 40° at 1.98 m. Those angles provide useful everyday and immersive comparison points, rather than a single correct seat position.
Is bigger always better?
No. Subtitles, sports scoreboards and game interfaces may be easier to scan on a smaller screen. Glare, viewing height, off-axis seats and poor source material can matter more than another size step.
