Portable Air Conditioner Window Kit and Exhaust Hose Explained
A portable air conditioner needs a practical route for hot exhaust air to leave the building.
Before buying, match the supplied outlet and hose to the exact window type, measure the opening, and confirm the unit can stand close enough without stretching or sharply bending the hose.

Why the hose matters
The refrigeration circuit absorbs heat indoors and releases it into an exhaust airstream. Sending that airstream back into the room returns the heat and adds the appliance's own electrical heat.
Simply placing the hose near an open window also allows substantial hot-air leakage.
Sliding and sash windows
Many units include an adjustable rigid panel with a circular hose port. It fits more naturally into vertically or horizontally sliding windows. Check the panel's minimum and maximum dimensions, port diameter and whether the closed window can hold it securely.
A generic kit is not guaranteed to match every frame.
Casement windows
Outward-opening UK casement windows usually need a fabric seal around the open sash or a purpose-made rigid panel. Check hinge position, handles and escape requirements.
A temporary fabric kit is easier to remove; a rigid solution can seal better but may require competent installation and permission in rented or listed property.
Keep the hose short and correctly routed
The hose carries hot air and radiates some heat back indoors. Avoid unnecessary length, tight bends, crushing and low loops that conflict with the manual. Do not substitute a narrower duct.
De'Longhi's official hose guidance advises against extending its supplied hose; the exact manufacturer's instructions take priority for every model.
Seal without creating a safety problem
Close gaps around the outlet while preserving any required ventilation, fire escape and window security. Do not make a permanent alteration without the property owner's permission and appropriate building advice.
Keep rain out and ensure the outlet cannot fall or direct hot moist air into another room, loft or enclosed corridor.
Position the unit on a stable floor with its required clearances. Confirm a suitable socket is reachable and keep the condensate arrangement accessible.
Then use the air-conditioner finder for capacity, read bedroom AC guidance, and calculate running cost.
Measure before choosing a kit
Record the clear opening width and height, frame depth, sill shape, handle position and direction of travel. Photograph the open and closed window with a tape measure visible.
This makes it easier to compare the supplied kit with the real aperture and to ask a manufacturer a precise compatibility question.
Sliding panels are commonly intended for sash or horizontally sliding openings. Outward-opening casement windows often need a purpose-made fabric seal or another manufacturer-approved arrangement.
A generic panel should not interfere with hinges, trickle vents, fire-escape requirements or safe window operation.
Installation checks
- The exhaust connection matches both the appliance and the kit.
- The hose reaches without extension, crushing or a tight bend.
- The panel or fabric seal closes gaps around the opening.
- Rain cannot readily enter through the arrangement.
- Hot exhaust cannot immediately return through another open section.
- The unit has its specified clearances and stands on a suitable level surface.
- The window remains as secure as the circumstances require.
Why hose length matters
The exhaust carries heat removed from the room plus heat produced by the appliance. A longer, compressed or sharply bent hose increases hot surface area and can restrict airflow.
Do not cover it with improvised insulation or substitute ducting unless the manufacturer explicitly permits that configuration.
After fitting, inspect the arrangement while the unit runs. Check for obvious leaks, excessive hose movement, unusual noise and hot air returning around the seal. Stop and follow the manual if the unit reports a fault or cannot exhaust freely.
