What Size Air Conditioner for a Bedroom?
Size a bedroom air conditioner from room volume and heat gains, then treat noise and window fit as hard requirements. A small shaded bedroom may suit a lower-capacity portable unit, while a larger west-facing room with two occupants can need more.
No single BTU figure applies to every bedroom of the same floor area.

Measure the occupied space
Use internal length, width and ceiling height. Include connected dressing areas or open en-suites if air moves freely into them. Record window dimensions and orientation, whether blinds or shutters reduce sun, and the time the bedroom becomes hottest.
Add normal heat sources: occupants, televisions, gaming systems and computers. A converted loft bedroom may also gain heat through the roof.

Noise at bedtime
Portable air conditioners contain the compressor and fan in the room, so they are generally more intrusive than a simple fan. Compare stated dB(A) at the intended mode, not a lowest figure that applies only to fan operation.
Pitch, cycling and rattles are not fully described by one number.
A sleep or night mode may reduce fan speed or change the temperature gradually; check the manual. A timer can pre-cool the room and stop the unit after bedtime, but the room may warm again if fabric and walls have stored heat.
Do not block ventilation or create an unsafe sleeping environment merely to contain cooled air.
Window and exhaust requirements
The unit must reject heat outdoors. Sash and sliding windows often accept rigid adjustable panels; outward-opening casement windows commonly need a fabric seal or a model-specific solution.
Measure the open aperture and check whether the window can still be secured appropriately.
Keep the hose as short and straight as the manufacturer requires. De'Longhi advises against lengthening its portable-AC hose and explains that its units vent outside through a window or wall.

Placement and portability
Allow the inlet and outlet clearances in the instructions. Avoid blowing cold air directly at the bed and keep curtains clear of the intake. Check that the cable reaches a suitable socket without an improvised extension.
If the unit will move between rooms, measure doors, steps and storage space; portable often means wheeled, not light.

Plan around the sleep routine
Decide whether the goal is to pre-cool before bed, run intermittently overnight or maintain a set temperature throughout sleep. Those are different jobs.
Pre-cooling can make compressor noise less disruptive, but its value depends on how quickly heat returns through the walls, roof and window.
Overnight operation makes the cooling-mode sound, display brightness, thermostat behaviour and condensate handling more important.
Check the manual for what sleep mode actually changes. It may alter fan speed, set temperature or display lighting, and it may not silence compressor cycling.
If sound is a priority, compare like-for-like published figures and buy from a retailer whose return terms allow an unsuitable product to be handled responsibly.
Bedroom installation checklist
- Measure the window opening, sill and any handle that may obstruct the kit.
- Confirm the window can be closed or secured around the installed seal as intended.
- Leave the inlet, outlet and hose clearances required by the manufacturer.
- Keep the airflow away from the sleeper where practical.
- Avoid trailing a cable across the route used at night.
- Check whether collected water needs manual draining in humid conditions.
- Plan where the unit and kit will be stored outside hot weather.
A fan remains useful when the room temperature is acceptable and personal airflow is enough. During cooler evenings, controlled ventilation may also be more appropriate.
