Drill Torque Explained

Torque is turning force and drill makers commonly express it in newton metres (Nm).

Maximum torque helps compare models within the same tool class, but it does not tell you drilling speed, control, impact performance or whether the tool is right for the material.

Hard and soft torque

Some makers publish different figures for a hard joint and a soft joint. Do not mix those figures when comparing products. Use the specification table and note the test convention where provided.

The clutch matters

Numbered clutch settings limit fastening torque before the chuck stops driving. Start low for small screws or delicate boards and increase only as required. Drill mode normally bypasses the clutch and should be selected only for an appropriate drilling task.

Why the largest number can mislead

A high-torque combi does not replace SDS for concrete, and an impact driver’s much larger fastening torque does not make it a precise general drill. Weight, speed range, capacity and control belong in the same decision.

Always match bits, fasteners and settings to their instructions.
