What Size Radiator for a Bedroom?
Choose a bedroom radiator by estimated heat loss in watts or BTU/h. Measure length, width and height, then account for windows, external walls, insulation, room position and the intended bedroom temperature. Do not select from radiator dimensions alone.

Record the bedroom accurately
Include bay windows and connected areas that are open to the room. Note whether the room has one or two external walls, sits above an unheated garage, or has a roof directly above it.
Record window type and approximate area rather than using house age as a substitute for insulation evidence.
Choose the design temperature consciously
A bedroom may have a lower preferred target than a living room, but comfort needs differ. Children's rooms, rooms used for daytime work and rooms occupied by vulnerable people may require a different professional design.

Radiator configuration
A long shallow panel beneath a window may fit the layout and spread heat across an external wall. A Type 22 can provide more output within limited width but projects farther.
A vertical radiator can release another wall for furniture, although its exact output and connection requirements must be checked. Curtains and beds should not obstruct airflow or create unsafe clearances.
System temperatures
Match the product output to the intended Delta T. A radiator that meets the requirement at ΔT50 may not do so on a lower-temperature system. Read Delta T explained and use manufacturer correction data.

Bedroom-specific heat-loss checks
Bedrooms at the edge or top of a building can behave very differently from identical rooms between heated spaces.
A corner bedroom has more exposed wall; a loft bedroom may have a large roof area; a ground-floor room over an unheated void has another loss path. Record these features instead of relying on a generic bedroom multiplier.

Comfort and control
A thermostatic radiator valve can limit room temperature when the system is operating, but it cannot make an undersized radiator produce its missing output.
Position controls so they can sense representative room air and follow the valve and boiler manufacturer's guidance. Heavy curtains or furniture around both radiator and valve can distort circulation and sensing.
Before ordering, check:
- Corrected output at the intended Delta T.
- Full installed depth including brackets and valves.
- Clearance from the bed, curtains and wardrobes.
- Safe wall fixings for the filled weight.
- Pipe-centre dimensions and whether existing connections suit.
- Access for bleeding, cleaning and future maintenance.
If the room also serves as a daytime office, choose the design temperature and schedule for its actual use rather than its label. After insulation or window improvements, recalculate instead of automatically replacing like for like.
Final sizing should be agreed with the person responsible for the whole heating design.
