What dehumidifier do I need?

Describe the space and the moisture problem. The finder will estimate a practical product class, explain the important trade-offs and compare a short list using published specifications.

Where will you use the dehumidifier?

How the estimate works

Capacity is only one part of the choice

Size and moisture load

Larger spaces, heavier condensation and indoor laundry move the result towards a higher extraction class.

Room temperature

Compressors are usually efficient in heated rooms. Desiccant technology is prioritised below 10°C because it remains effective without relying on a cold coil.

Practical features

Laundry mode, continuous drainage and a quieter low setting only improve a match when your answers make them useful.

Dehumidifier questions

What does a 12L or 20L dehumidifier rating mean?

It is the manufacturer’s maximum daily extraction under stated laboratory conditions. A machine will normally collect less water in a cooler or less humid UK room, so the number is a comparison class rather than a promise of daily collection.

Is a compressor or desiccant dehumidifier better?

Compressor models are usually the practical choice for heated living spaces. Desiccant models continue to work effectively at lower temperatures, which can make them a better fit for an unheated garage, basement, boat or similar cold space, although their power input is often higher.

Can I use a dehumidifier in a bathroom?

Do not place an ordinary electrical appliance where it can be splashed or exposed to wet-zone conditions. Position it outside the bathroom when possible and follow the manufacturer’s safety and clearance instructions.

Does SetupSelect test these products?

No. Matches use declared answers and manufacturer-published specifications. SetupSelect does not claim hands-on testing, and links to each manufacturer source so you can check the data.

Best next step

Estimate the electricity cost

Once you have a likely dehumidifier class, use the product’s stated input watts with your tariff and expected use time. Do not use the extraction figure as electrical power.
